Grout

Grout is an adhesive agent used in the final stage of tile installation. It fills the spaces between the tiles, reinforcing the bonding while also serving as a decorative trim.

Grout is available for sanded and non-sanded applications, and both are available in a variety of colors. The version for non-sanded applications is used where joint widths are less than 1/8” wide, and the one for sanded applications where joints widths are 1/8” or wider.

Grout color is a very important decision.  One popular method is to match the grout color with the darker tone of the tile. This will provide a nice decorative accent while eliminating excessive cleaning. It is important to know that lighter colors will still show dirt more readily than darker colors, even though the majority of grouts are manufactured with stain resistant polymers.

To reduce maintenance in the future you should seal the grout joints right away.

Grout manufacturers generally recommend re-sealing the grout joints twice a year to ensure stain protection.

Sealers

Sealers are clear coatings applied to surfaces to help reduce wear and protect against stains.

A premium natural look penetrating/impregnating sealer is often used on stones where the natural color is desired. This is the normal choice on marble, limestone, granite or slate. Penetrating/impregnating stone sealers are a no-sheen, natural look sealer that can be water-based or solvent-based. Most quality sealers of this type are rated to protect the stone a minimum of 10 years.

A stone enhancer sealer is often used on stones where a darker, enriched or highlighted character is desired. This is used on slate.

Stone enhancer sealers are also a no-sheen, penetrating/ impregnating sealer that is formulated to darken, enrich, and highlight the natural color and beauty of stone. They will rejuvenate and improve the appearance of worn and weathered stone, but they will also darken the color of grout joints. They are rated to protect the stone a minimum of 3 years.

When choosing either one of these two types of sealers, make sure the brand you have chosen is formulated to provide maximum stain protection for stone products. Stone products should be tested periodically to insure that the sealer is working effectively.
There are also sealers for grout that can be beneficial in areas exposed to water and grease, like kitchen countertops and backsplashes.

Sealing is strongly recommended for newly installed natural stone to provide maximum below surface stain protection.

To insure your natural stone products will provide you with a lifetime of aesthetics and utility, proper maintenance is crucial. Natural Stone products are porous by nature and require a different maintenance than ceramic tile.
