Meta Tags: Are very important (to some search engines - Meta Tags (basically “meta tags” are page title tags and site descriptions) are not DEAD to ALL search engines!!). Try to keep it short n sweet - around 25 words) I usually use the first sentence from the first paragraph on the web page (because some search engines use the info from the page). Be sure to use keywords that separate your page from others - if possible. It's not necessary to separate the words with comma's as in the past. It's okay to occasional repeat a word but if you do it too many times/padding - then some search engines reject your submittal/submission :( Don't use words that DO NOT Relate to your content.
Note 1: Besides the meta tags most search engines pay close attention to the title. Therefore, make sure each page has a unique descriptive title.
Note 2: A few larger search engines have stopped using the meta/keywords. However, some still use the meta description. And a few smaller search engines Do still use 'keywords' and the more links you have to a page - the higher the rating in search engines. So when you read Meta Tags are Dead - that is misleading (some search engines still use keywords). And all of the search engines use some of the Meta tags!
Note 3: The info should be Honest (i.e. trying to pad a web site with words not related to your site will only result in your banishment from that search engine)
Note 4: On your web page, the opening sentences (usually opening 25 words) are what Some search engines use for a page description. What I often do, is use the same sentence(s) for the meta description and the opening sentence of the page.
The following sites require you to find the right section for your page!!
DMOZ (One of the best)
The business submission/submittal section of Yahoo is no longer free. But other sections are still free. I use regional sections - such as city or state.
For DMOZ and Yahoo, you first need to use their search engine with various combinations of your best key words. Then you'll find the category used by your competition. You can also view the source code of some of the higher rated competition. That way you can see if they have some keywords you missed. But again, don't pad you keywords - use only keywords that really relate to your site.
New Google Competitor = Accoona
Note: Some directory listings are not crawled by all search engines - BUT all links help.) Search-Info (Automatic Insertion )
Free Search Engines Submisions
Note: Sometimes you have to read carefully to find the section that is free i.e. some free and some commercial submittal are on same page or site.)
(Free link is hidden near bottom - you must register to submit. )
The bottom line is that some subjects/keywords are so common that your site may be lost in a million web pages. All you can do is 'hope' -- but do so with your best keywords/meta tags. Be sure to not 'jump the gun' and submit before you have the site completed, including all the meta tags (description and keywords).
For Yahoo - I had to use the regional (Arkansas) section - because the business section is not free now. I picked Arkansas - Manufacturing - Plastic. This enable me to enter business info based on location and not have to pay for a business listing.
It helps when you have a site/subject that has unique key words relating to the industry/classification. Once you find the yahoo category that best fits you may discover it's only in the business section - therefore, not a free submittal. But what you can do is find a free section such as local section (city or state). After all , when you get your site listed the key words people search for can pull you up above some business that payed for a listing.
DMOZ works like yahoo but you can go directly to the category section and still use the free submittal.
